While Covid-19 is causing much suffering around the world, the silver lining is when we see communities coming together to help those in need.
AMURT UK has stepped up its work in North London, ongoing since 1975, by offering its experience and services to the local community.
AMURT UK is part of a global grassroots disaster relief and community development organisation. All AMURT chapters follow the same underlying principles: “to help improve the quality of life for the poor and disadvantaged people of the world, and those affected by calamity and conflict.”
Each chapter applies these principals to the local needs.
AMURT UK is using two of its long-term activities in London as a stepping stone to helping the community in this time of Covid.
Food for All is AMURT’s community-oriented health food shop, operating in Hackney since 1975. Its profits are dedicated to AMURT activities. At present Food for All is re-orienting its business model to help those in need in the community.
AMURT also has operated a feeding programme for homeless people in Holborn since 2011. Currently we feed up to 150 people each Thursday.
This progamme is also being revamped to help those in need because of Covid, while still helping our long-term clientele.
Recently AMURT UK has received three grants to help our work, and is teaming with another charity for the same purpose.
The three grants are from Martin Lewis Corona Charity Fund (#martinlewiscoronafund), Crisis and City Bridge Trust.
The grants will broadly have two purposes. First to help Food for All to increase its services for the elderly, vulnerable, and those requiring special care, in Hackney. Second is increasing the effectiveness of the London Feeding Programme. LFP will provide nutritional supplements to the homeless, as well as increasing hygiene and personal protection, both for those serving the food and for the clientele.
As well, AMURT UK is happy to announce a working agreement with Badu Sports in Hackney to provide fresh vegetarian and vegan pre-packed meals to the most vulnerable children (ages 3 to 18) and their families in Hackney.
