There are 7 containers near the train station in Mainz, Germany, which can accommodate 28 homeless people until April. There is one day care center nearby where people can meet, receive social help and meet their hygienic needs. In the picture you can see a “resident” who is happy about some groceries.
Hundreds of thousands of people in Germany (2016) don’t have a home – and during the winter, cold weather and illness can put them in life-threatening situations. Many of them are already weak, says Werena Rosenke from the Federal Organization for Helping the Homeless (BAG). If they get sick there is a real danger they could die of hypothermia, even in a milder winter. Modified containers are short-term solution for many homeless.
